What is different about coverage in Texas

Texas Medicaid is run by the Texas Health and Human Services Commission, and Texas uses the federal HealthCare.gov Marketplace rather than a state-run exchange. Texas Medical Insurance is free to use for Texas callers working through Medicare, ACA, life, or supplemental coverage questions.

  • Texas Medicaid and CHIP are administered by the Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) -- HHSC is the agency to know if your Medicaid or CHIP eligibility changed.
  • Texas does not run its own ACA exchange, so Texas marketplace shopping and subsidy questions go through the federal HealthCare.gov Marketplace.
  • Free Medicare counseling is available in Texas through HICAP (Health Information, Counseling and Advocacy Program) at 800-252-9240, separate from Texas Medical Insurance's own free phone help.

Worth knowing: Texas has not expanded Medicaid to all low-income adults, so Texas Medicaid eligibility rules can differ meaningfully from states that did expand -- worth confirming directly with HHSC or by phone rather than assuming another state's rules apply.

Common Texas questions

Where do I shop for ACA health plans in Texas?

Texas residents shop through HealthCare.gov (federal Marketplace) (https://www.healthcare.gov/texas/). An independent agent such as Lander LLC can explain the plans for you, but the marketplace is the only place premium tax credits are applied.

How do I apply for Medicaid in Texas?

Medicaid in Texas is run through Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) (https://www.hhs.texas.gov/services/health/medicaid-chip). Eligibility depends on income, household size and other factors, and it is decided by the state, not by an insurance agency.

Who regulates insurance in Texas?

Texas Department of Insurance (TDI) (https://www.tdi.texas.gov/consumer/) regulates insurance companies and agents in Texas. You can use it to check that an agent or company is licensed and to file a complaint.

Is there free, unbiased Medicare help in Texas?

Yes. Texas HICAP (Health Information, Counseling and Advocacy Program) (800-252-9240) offers free Medicare counseling through the State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP), separate from any insurance agency.

Does Texas Medical Insurance cost anything to use?

There is no cost to call or to speak with an agent. Insurance premiums and plan costs are set by the insurance companies and are separate from our help.
